Attic Insulation And Roof Ventilation: Why Your Roof Depends On Both

The attic decides how long a roof lasts. Too little insulation and the roof melts snow from below all winter. Too little ventilation and it cooks the shingles all summer. Here's how the two work together, and the signs yours don't.

What Insulation Does For A Roof

Insulation's job is to keep the heat you pay for in the rooms below the attic floor. When it does that, the roof deck above stays close to the outdoor temperature, snow on the roof stays frozen, and it melts evenly in the sun and wind. When it doesn't, the deck warms from below, snow melts from the bottom, the meltwater runs to the cold eave and refreezes, and you have an ice dam. On a snowy street the houses with thin attics give themselves away: a bare stripe down the roof where the heat is leaving.

Order matters. Air leaks move more heat than thin insulation does, so sealing comes first: the attic hatch, recessed light housings, the gaps where plumbing, wiring, and the chimney pass through the ceiling. Then depth. Most attics in the 1960s and 1970s homes around Tewksbury and Billerica have a fraction of what the current Massachusetts energy code calls for, and that's usually visible at a glance; if you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, there isn't enough.

Blown cellulose and blown fiberglass are the usual choices for topping up an existing attic, batts work where the framing is open and regular, and spray foam is the tool for sealing odd spaces and the underside of a roof deck. What Ventilation Does For A Roof

Ventilation carries away whatever heat and moisture still make it into the attic. The system works like this: cold outside air enters low, through vents in the soffit, washes up along the underside of the roof deck, and leaves high, through a vent along the ridge. Baffles at the eaves hold that channel open where the insulation would otherwise block it. Intake and exhaust have to be balanced, or air doesn't move.

In winter that airflow keeps the deck cold and carries out the moisture that rises from the house, which is what stops frost from forming on the underside of the sheathing and dripping like a leak on the first warm day. In summer it stops the attic from becoming an oven. An attic that runs far hotter than the air outside bakes the shingles from below, and that shortens their life more than anything the weather does from above. Shingle manufacturers write ventilation requirements into their warranties for that reason.

What Is A Soffit, And Why It Matters

The soffit is the panel on the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia board (where the gutters hang) and the house wall. On most homes it's perforated or fitted with vents, and it's where the whole ventilation system takes its air in. A soffit that's been painted over, blocked by insulation shoved into the eaves, or replaced with a solid panel shuts the intake, and a ridge vent with no intake does nothing. Signs Of Poor Attic Ventilation

  • Frost on the underside of the roof sheathing or on the nail tips in winter, and water stains there in spring
  • A damp, musty smell in the attic, or dark staining and mold on the sheathing
  • An attic in summer that's much hotter than the air outside, and rooms below it that won't cool down
  • Shingles curling or aging early on a roof that isn't old
  • Ice dams in the same spots every winter
  • A ridge vent with no soffit vents feeding it, or soffit vents packed with insulation
  • A bathroom or dryer fan venting into the attic instead of outside

Two or more of those together usually mean the attic is holding heat and moisture it should be shedding.

Ridge Vent, Gable Vent, Or Fan?

Continuous ridge vent fed by open soffits is the system that works best on most roofs, and it has no moving parts. Gable vents, the louvers in the end walls, were the original ventilation on many older homes and still work on their own, but mixing them with a ridge vent can short-circuit the airflow, pulling air in at one gable and out at the other while the soffits sit idle. Powered attic fans move a lot of air, and if the attic floor isn't sealed they pull that air from the conditioned rooms below, which costs you heating and cooling. Roof Replacement Is The Time To Fix It

Everything above is easiest to get right when the shingles are off. No. A ridge vent is the exhaust; it needs intake low on the roof, at the soffits, to pull air through. Without open soffit vents the ridge vent sits idle, or pulls air from the wrong places. If the soffits are solid or blocked with insulation, adding intake vents and baffles is the first fix, and it's usually a small job.

It's the biggest part of the fix. Ice dams form when heat escaping through the attic melts snow from below, so sealing air leaks in the ceiling and adding insulation to the current code depth keeps the roof deck cold and the snow frozen. Ventilation carries off the heat that still gets through, and an ice-and-water barrier at the eaves catches whatever backs up. A house with all three rarely has an ice dam again.
